Nutritional Supplements Helpful for Peripheral Neuropathy
I have made arrangements with with 2 suppliers, iherb.com and Pure Encapsulations to provide my patients with high-quality nutritional supplements.
iHerb.com has been rated the best online nutritional supplement supplier for the past 3 years! They really have great prices and offer a large variety of name brands. Additionally, they have consumer reviews for most of the specific products. Generally, the brands I’m comfortable recommending are Jarrow, Solgar, Carlson, and Thorne. (That doesn’t mean other brands aren’t any good, just that I’m not as familiar with them.) First time buyers get $5.00 off.
Pure Encapsulations products are excellent but are generally more expensive than what you’ll find at iherb.com. I and my patients who have used them have been very happy with the results to date, and I feel very comfortable in recommending them to you. Please Note: I am only offering a select portion of Pure Encapsulations products, primarily the ones helpful for neuropathy.
Offering supplements online allows me to charge less than through my office where I would have the added costs of maintaining an inventory.

General Recommendations and Dosages
Vitamin B1 – as Benfotiamine – 400-600 mg/day
Vitamin B12 – Only get methyl B12 (also known as methylcobalamin) – 5000 micrograms (mcg) or 5mg. Take this on empty stomach in the morning. As there doesn’t seem to be a toxic level of B12 in the body, you can feel safe taking this high of a level. Why B12?
Vitamin B6 – 50 mg a day
Folic Acid – 800 mcg. Taken as methyl folate seems to offer better results.
Magnesium – 300 mg/day if not diabetic, 500-600 mg/day if diabetic.
Alpha Lipoic Acid – 600mg/day, which can either be all at once or 200mg, 3 times a day. Best taken 1-2 hours away form meals.
Acetyl-L-Carnitine – up to 1000mg, 3 times a day. About Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Fish Oil – containing a combined 3000 to 4000 mg of EPA and DHA a day.Fish Oils in Neuropathy”
Psyllium – either in bulk or in capsules. Build up to 3 tablespoon a day.
Vitamin D3 – 2000 IU/day. Oil based capsules seem to be better than dry tablets. Make sure you have your doctor test you for your for Vitamin D levels within 2 months of taking this amount. Too much vitamin D is toxic and not a good thing.
